We’re noticing some really cool new trends with of this year’s new parks and playgrounds! Bright colors, nets and structures to climb, hot wheels tracks, nature play components, different types of swings, and design that’s mindful of accessibility are included in these playground replacement projects.

Check out the newest playgrounds to be installed or renovated, then read on to see what other new playgrounds have popped up in the last few years in case you’ve missed them.

New Playgrounds Completed in 2024

Burns Field Park, Hinsdale

Burns playground is being renovated to include new equipment for ages 2-5 years old as well as 5-12 years old. It’s a fun green and blue playground with plenty of space to run, climb, swing, and slide. This new playground will be open the first week of May 2024.

This new playground opened on February 1, 2024 and is a National Demonstration Site (NDS), which means it utilizes NatureGrounds, Me2, and Play On! best design practices so that everyone, no matter their age or ability, can have fun.

This neighborhood playground is ready for play! The ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21 at 5pm with refreshments and an opportunity to enjoy the new playground, swing set, picnic shelter, plaza, and open space.

New Parks Are Coming! Playground Construction Projects

Sensory Garden Playground, Lisle

It’s happening! Construction will begin on the 5 to 12 year old phase of the Sensory Garden Playground in Fall 2024. This all-abilities playground is expanding to offer more for the older kids, including slides, a spinner, accessible ramps, bridges, tactile learning, and more. Get more details here.

Pick Park, Elmhurst

There’s a brand new park coming to Elmhurst! Pick Park will be built in an area that was previously considered a park desert, where homes are not within walking distance of a park. New amenities include a playground for 2-5 and 5-12-year-olds, bench seating, game table, shade shelter, adult fitness equipment, and a bike repair station. They are targeting for this new park and playground to be done by the end of June 2024.

Westmont Park District is building a new neighborhood park in 2024 on Grant St. between Ogden Avenue and Naperville Road with Burke equipment. More information coming!

Playgrounds Being Replaced in 2024

  • Southland Park, Lombard: Features planned for the park were based on community input including pickleball and bocce ball courts, improvements to soccer and baseball fields, new play environment with ADA additions, picnic shelters, asphalt pathways, walking trail and more.
  • Happiness Park, Arlington Heights: Construction is underway in April 2024 for this new playground that will include a zipline and play structure with a ship theme. Click here to see more renderings and construction timeline.
  • High Ridge Park, Westchester
  • Sunrise Park, Bensenville: Bensenville Park District announced it’s plans for 2024-25 projects, which include improving Fischer Farm infrastructure; a new playground, soccer fields, futsal, pickleball and basketball courts at Sunrise Park; resurfacing the pool basin and pool deck at the Bensenville Water Park & Splash Pad and improvements at the White Pines Golf Club.
  • Pioneer Park, Elmhurst: This park improvement project includes a playground replacement! Construction is scheduled to be completed by early September and you can see more renderings of what the new playground will look like on the Elmhurst Park District website.
  • Hawthorne Junction, Wheaton: This neighborhood park will have new opportunities for tot play.
  • Terrace View Park, Oakbrook Terrace: Terrace View Park playground is currently under construction and is expected to be completed this summer. It will have a poured-in-place rubber surface, umbrella shade, OmniSpin Spinner, dome climber, musical instruments, a panel play structure for early childhood play and swings, including traditional swings, a baby swing, accessible bucket swing, and expression swing.   • Heritage Place Park, Naperville: The shaded play structure will have swings, monkey bars, climbing ropes, slides, a balance beam and benches.
  • Oakridge Parkway, Naperville

  • Frontier Sports Complex (West), Naperville: The east playground was renovated in 2022 and now the west will be redone
  • Butterfly Park, Streamwood: This park will be getting a new playground, new park shelter and walking path, ADA accessible benches and a butterfly/pollinator garden. Click here for more info.
  • Blackberry Crossing West Park, Montgomery: This new park will have an ADA-accessible playground, Pickleball courts, athletic fields, and more. It has been under construction for a while and has seen many delays, so we haven’t gotten an opening date yet.
  • Leslie Park, Bloomingdale: Park improvements will include playgrounds for ages 2-5 and 5-12, shaded seating, a fence around the play area, frisbee golf, bag games, and more. Read more about plans for the park.
  • Hudson Crossing Park, Oswego
  • Community Park at Grande Park, Plainfield
  • Walter Park, Carol Stream: This park renovation is expected to begin in summer 2023 and take about two years to complete. Read more here.
  • Constitution Park, Downers Grove: Scheduled to be completed in 2024, this park project will include a new playground with wheelchair-accessible play equipment, a playhouse for preschoolers, a tricycle path, a permanent picnic shelter, and walking path. Read more about the plans.
  • Discovery Park Playground, Hanover Park: Read more about the project and see renderings here.
  • Yena Park, La Grange Park
  • Sunrise Park, Bensenville
  • Veterans Memorial Park, Westmont: They will be replacing the zipline at this amazing playground.
  • Ty Warner Park, Westmont: A new ADA accessible mini trampoline will be installed in the tot playground where the tot berm currently sits near the sand play area.
  • Fritz Werley Park, Westmont: Replacing the 22 year old playground with a new Landscape Structures Playground.
  • Williams Cove Park, Westmont: Replacing the 24 year old 5-12 year age appropriate play structure with new Landscape Structures play equipment.
  • Langum Park, St. Charles
  • Administrative and Leisure Center Play Park and Nature Lab, Des Plaines: The playground is officially open to the public while the 2nd phase is still under construction. The plan includes a turtle pond.

The new playground, officially open to the public on June 18, 2022, features pour-in-place rubber playground surfacing and many play components that promote sensory, motor, cognitive, and social-emotional skills, as well as strength. The following equipment, made by Landscape Structures, can be found at this playground: Rhapsodyโ„ข Kettle Drum, Rhapsodyโ„ข Vito Metallophone, Rhapsodyโ„ข Cascata Bells, a Bobble Rider, Sway Fun Glider, We-Saw, WhirlyQโ„ข Spinner and Cozy Domeโ„ข DB.

You’ll find a large, shaded picnic pavilion at this park with a mud-free turf surface. It was designed with inclusivity in mind and has multiple play structures for older and younger kids alike. The first inclusive playground in Glen Ellyn incorporates a variety of experiences including, musical instruments, a sensory garden, and a dedicated structure for young children ages 2-5. There is also a new bike rack, shaded seating area, and benches. The playground is currently open, but the last piece of equipment just came in and the sensory garden still needs to be planted, so stay tuned for final photos!

Play structures for older and younger kids, as well as a soft, spongy surface and a shaded pavilion with picnic tables. This park underwent a big renovation to include a new playground for ages 2-12 years old featuring a 33″ zipline, spinning sensory wave seats, swings, suspension bridge, slides and climbers. It also has another playground area for ages 18 months to 5 years old, concrete paths throughout the park, t-ball backstop with base paths, a tennis court, pickleball lined court, half-court basketball areas, baggo courts, and pavilion shelter.

A paved path meanders nearby this playground that has multiple types of swings, including an accessible swing and a two-person swing. You’ll find a shaded pavilion with picnic tables nearby, too.

This boldly colored neighborhood playground’s tall slides and climbing features will appeal to older kids, and there’s elements for little ones too, including an expression swing. You’ll find both shaded picnic tables and a work table with solar-powered outlets.

This playground near a soccer field has a nice, shady gazebo with picnic tables. The swings include adaptive and two-person options. Getting to this playground is a little tricky because GPS brings you to the high school parking lot through a driveway not accessible to the public. It’s located on Kingsbrooke Crossing near Wilshire Lane.

This colorful playground has some cool climbing elements we haven’t seen at other playgrounds. Set back a bit from the parking lot with White Eagle community building, this park has play structures for both toddlers and older children. It has various climbing features, ropes, lily pads to walk across, as well as a few bays of swings including one baby swing. Pack a lunch to eat in the covered picnic table shelter. There is a large field next to the playground, perfect for flying a kite or playing catch.

Frontier Sports Complex (East), Naperville

Frontier Sports Complex is a major hub for sporting events in Naperville. Families can find two separate playground areas, the west one located at 3380 Cedar Glade Road and the east one located at 3415 Book Road. The east playground of Frontier Park received a welcome upgrade in 2022. Visitors will find both a toddler and elementary-aged climbing structures. The larger playground has shade sails, along with a hanging glider and swings. Frontier Park has bathrooms, newly installed basketball courts, soccer fields, and new pickleball courts set to be finished in summer 2023. Looking for a new playground? Head to the west side of Frontier, where youโ€™ll find more play structures, a skate park, bathrooms, and additional sports fields.

Four Seasons playground has quite a few different play structures for various ages, as well as a ninja-style obstacle course on artificial turf. You’ll also find picnic tables and a paved walking path that leads down to a pond. This renovated park features a challenge course and also includes rain garden plantings, fishing stations, bench seating area, soccer fields, baggo courts, pickleball courts, and woodland trails.

The existing play equipment was replaced with a new ADA-compliant playground. The new playground features a Curva Spinner to hold on to and spin and a We-Saw, which is a new take on the traditional seesaw with seating for four people plus a middle area for more friends. Completed October, 2022.

This neighborhood park was replaced with a new ADA compatible playground. It has a poured-in-place surface, extended concrete paths with bridges, and ADA compatible picnic table. The expression swing is great and two different slides appeal to different age groups. Completed September, 2022.

The GT Wave climbing structure near the main playground and Gravity Rail right next to the treehouse were added Summer 2022. The GT Wave gives children plenty of opportunities to climb and then slide down and the Gravity Rail has a swing seat attached to a curved rail so you can glide through the air a couple feet off the ground. This ADA accessible playground completed in August, 2022 is the first playground in Oswego to feature synthetic turf. In addition to the new playground, there is also a half-court basketball court, nature walk with pollinator/bird houses and interpretive signage, and picnic shelter.

You are going to love the new Route 66 playground in the back half of the park beyond the music barn and bridge. Bounce on the in-ground trampolines, climb up the Willis Tower to slide down the tube slides, balance on the surf boards, traverse between rocks in the Grand Canyon section, hang out with Mater, and climb around. There’s a new Challenge Course in the style of American Ninja Warrior, designed for kids 13 years old and up at Walker Park. Pleasant Dale Park District also renovated their 5-12 year old playground to include a disc net climber with double swoosh slide, tight-rope bridge, boogie board, and a sky rail climber. The renovated park now has synthetic turf in the playground area, a picnic pavilion, restroom, and game area in the southwest corner with a ping pong table, baggo and relocated Gaga pit from the east side of the park. While the playground is remaining the same, playground games was added, including a mini-race track, tetherball, gaga ball, and a little fun fitness walk. This bright playground has a new rubbery surface, two playgrounds for different age groups, a friendship swing, and hopscotch play area. There is also a chess table and two permanent bags games nearby. Completed in June, 2020.

There isn’t a parking lot for this park, but there is a gravel area off to the side of Chicago Avenue or you can park in the neighborhood.

Willowbrook Park is located right behind Willowbrook High School. You can park in the high school parking lot and walk across a small bridge to access this fun park with interactive features and two zip lines. This playground was completed in October, 2019.

North Terrace Park is located on the north side of the train tracks. It has a small parking lot with a path that leads around a pond with a small fountain (and usually ducks) to the new playground with colorful equipment and a couple swings, completed in May, 2019.

In addition to the new playground, a permenant restroom building, pavilion, bike path around the wetland area, and a boardwalk with bridge were added. There is a sledding hill for the winter months at the park. This project also included Westmont’s first fishing pier!

New Playgrounds in 2017

We had the chance to check out some brand new playgrounds in the western suburbs and it was so fun to see what the park districts have been working on for the community! Photographs are included below so you can see all the fun you and your kids can have at these new playgrounds!

Euclid Square Park, Oak Park

This new playground was completed at the end of August, 2017 and features a soft, permeable rubbery surface, two areas of equipment, and built-in mounds for climbing, which have quickly become a favorite. It is fenced-in with the exception of an opening near the adjacent tennis courts. There is also a small sled hill at this park, so you can look forward to that this winter!

Heritage Park, Oakbrook Terrace

The renovation of Heritage Park completed in October, 2017, includes tennis courts, sand volleyball and a shelter, outdoor fitness equipment, a net climber, basketball courts and a large playground. There is a parking lot right next to the playground area, which makes it very convenient. The huge equipment is great for older kids, while the adjacent area is perfect for little ones!

This beautiful playground surrounded by trees features an Expression Swing, which is a swing with an adult and toddler seat so you can swing together, and artificial turf that is soft to walk on. There are two sections for different age groups. The park officially opened on November 4, 2017.
