Indoor Places to GoIndoor Play

Take your kids to the playground, rain or shine. During Open Play at Rainbow Play Systems, children can climb, slide, swing, and hang, all without worrying about the weather. With two locations in the Chicago area, one in Naperville and another in Vernon Hills, children can have fun bringing the outdoors indoors.

Read below for details about visiting this unique spot for indoor play.

Features of Open Play at Rainbow Play Systems

Rainbow Play Systems is a leader in backyard play sets, specializing in wooden clubhouses, castles and ships. They open their doors during the week for families to come enjoy open play time in their showroom. Each show room is filled with playsets of various heights and styles, with swings, monkey bars, climbing ropes, slides, and tire swings, your child will love to explore all the details in these incredible playsets.

My children especially loved the playsets shaped liked ships, including telescopes, steering wheels and hidden ladders inside. Rainbow Play Systems also sells trampolines, so visitors can find a large trampoline or two along the side of the play space.

Please note: shoes or socks are required for indoor play. No bare feet are allowed.

Food

Rainbow Playsets does not sell food or drinks, and it is not allowed in the play areas. Children are allowed to bring water, so make sure to fill your water bottles before you come. The Vernon Hills location is within 5-10 minutes of Hawthorn Mall, and the Naperville location is within 10 minutes of Fox Valley Mall. Surrounding both of these malls are countless restaurants if you’re looking for a lunch break before or after your play session.

Bathrooms

There are individual bathrooms available for use while playing at the showroom in Rainbow Play Systems.

Hours

Both Rainbow Play Systems in Naperville and Vernon Hills host Open Play on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Call ahead for holiday hours and schedule changes.

Prices

Open Play costs $10 per child, with children under 1 free. Credit cards or checks are accepted; cash is not. Admission includes 2 hours of play time.

Pricing details were updated in February 2024 and are subject to change.

Recommended Ages

Children of all ages will enjoy their time at Open Play, but it is most enjoyable for older toddlers and up. Some of the play structures can be quite tall, making it harder to reach for little ones.

Much of your child’s excitement will depend on their level of independence and comfort. My 5-year old spent the full two hours running around playing, but a few years ago, he was much quieter and more conservative with his play time.

Be prepared to have to climb up on to meet them if needed. My 10-year old still loves to put her playground skills to the test at Open Play. This is a great option for a change of scenery when you’re looking to play, but want something besides a traditional trampoline park.

Best Days/Times To Go

Like many play places, the afternoons at Rainbow Showrooms are quieter for visitors. Mornings tend to be more full, as well as days off school when elementary-aged children are home to play.
