What kid doesn’t love spending quality time with their grandparents? While my kids love exploring with my husband and me, there are certain places they specifically ask to go to with their grandparents. It could be a favorite family tradition, a spot you loved growing up, or a special interest grandparents and grandkids share. These locations in the western and northwest suburbs will hopefully give your family a good starting point for planning a special day full of memories for grandparents and grandkids alike. Send this family resource to the grandparents in your life!
Fun Activities For Grandparents to Check Out with Their Grandkids
Spend the Day Outdoors

Getting the kids into nature is a great way to burn off some energy before nap time. Check out these local spots for nature play. Most all have paths, picnic areas and outdoor fun for the kids as well as indoor activities.
Local Theaters with Movie Deals

Going to see a movie at the theater is always a favorite childhood memory. Between the movie and the snacks, the theater is a great way to spend a rainy or hot summer afternoon. Our list of theaters with movie deals highlights options that come with a family-friendly price tag.
Kid-Centered Restaurants

These kid-friendly restaurants offer more than great food, with added excitement just for kids. A few of our favorites include 2Toots Train Whistle Grill with locations in Bartlett and Glen Ellyn, Pilot Pete’s in Schaumburg, or JoJo’s Shake Bar in Naperville, which is home to the most decadent desserts.

Local Zoos

We are fortunate to have our choice of local, small zoos in the suburbs. These zoos have plenty of animals to see without quite as much walking as the bigger zoos. Phillips Park Zoo in Aurora, Wheaton’s Cosley Zoo and Randall Oaks Zoo in West Dundee are some of our favorites.
Fenced-In Playgrounds

A fenced-in playground is always a nice way to keep those little legs from getting too far away. Fenced in play spaces give kids and grandparents both a little more freedom, with peace of mind. Our playground guide has ideas for every kind of park you could be looking for, with ninja parks, inclusive playgrounds, best parks for toddlers, and mulch-free playgrounds.
Family Game Night

You don’t need to leave the house to enjoy quality time together. We’ve rounded up the best board games for every occasion, whether you’re planning a family game night with young kids or hosting a big gathering where everyone wants to join in.
