Review: Shrek The Musical

Shrek The Musical is at The Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire! Yes, I know we’re talking about a theater outside the typical Kidlist area, but this theater is worth the drive. With “theatre in the round” seating and a live band, it’s the perfect place to take the kids for their first show or to revisit on a regular basis. Keep reading for our review of Shrek The Musical, including a special opportunity available to all guests after the show.

Getting to The Marriott Theatre and Parking

I packed up my 4 year old son and two daughters, ages 5 and 7 for an early Saturday morning drive. Google maps took me on an easy route up 294 and we arrived in the parking lot 15 minutes prior to show time. I was a little nervous that parking would be difficult, but it couldn’t have been easier. We pulled into a relatively full lot, but there were still a good amount of open spots in the back row. It’s a quick walk inside and the box office is immediately on your left. There were two windows open and the lines quickly moved so we were able to pick up our tickets with no issue. We went up a beautiful staircase, snapped some photos, and were in our seats with 6 minutes to spare.

Seating

In this type of theater, the audience surrounds the stage, which is right in the center so the actors enter and exit up the aisles. Due to the location of the stage, there is minimal set design and use of props as to not obstruct the audience’s view, so imaginations play a big part in the show. There is a wonderful amount of leg room and from what I could tell, there isn’t a bad seat in the house. My children really enjoyed sharing such an intimate space with the actors and I liked that there were no complaints of “I can’t see!”.

Shrek The Musical Review

The Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Shrek The Musical is on Netflix, so I already knew my kids (boy age 4, girls age 5 and 7) would enjoy the story line since they had watched it a dozen times over the summer. The show was an hour shorter than the Netflix version at 1 hour and 15 minutes (no intermission), making it the perfect amount of time for a 4, 5, and 7 year old to sit still without complaint.

Shrek The Musical took the animated film, added some very catchy songs, and really brought out the personalities of the already lovable characters. Each fairy tale character had an elaborate costume and played their part with more detail than in the original movie. You meet Shrek and Fiona as children and learn a little backstory on them. The musical also gives more insight as to how Shrek and Fiona fell in love (while the kids fall over in their seats) during a 2 minute burping and flatulence challenge the two share! The jokes and story line were aimed at children and adults alike, so it really kept us all entertained and we loved the interactive discussion at the end.

Special Opportunity After the Show

After the show, the actors take about 15 minutes to introduce themselves and all the backstage crew by name, explain the layout of the theater, and host a question and answer session. Seeing ‘Pinocchio’ up close walking around and talking to the kids in the theater made my kids so excited. (We also ran into him out of costume when we were exiting the bathroom after the show, which they were blown away by!) I was very surprised that the question and answer portion was most interesting for my 4 year old son. Towards the end of the show, he had been getting antsy in his seat. Once the actors came out of character and started describing the parts of the theater and the different jobs, he was extremely focused and even wanted to ask questions, which is very unlike him!

Having grown up in Palos Park, Claudia has a great love for the southwest suburbs and the hidden gems of the area. Claudia currently lives in Tinley Park with her husband and four children (two girls, ages 6 and 4 and two boys, ages 3 and 1). Cabin fever with four children can get rough, so they’re always looking for new and exciting adventures outside of the house! During the warmer months, you’ll find her and the family at the pool, out on nature walks, grilling in the yard, or at the zoo. And pick a park, any park… Claudia’s kids possess a magical super power of being able to detect the nearest park within a 5 mile radius, so there’s always a stop off on the way home to discover new playgrounds! When the cold comes, they like to craft, hibernate at the library or indoor play places, and play in the snow. In her tiny sliver of free time, Claudia enjoys sewing, photography, and baking.
