When the weather prevents you from burning off energy outside, the Park District of La Grange indoor playground at the Recreation Center will keep your kids moving! Fun equipment and murals make you feel like you’re in the movie A Bug’s Life. This spot is a fun choice for winter weather or a rainy day.

Keep reading to find out more about the PDLG’s Rec Center Playground, as well as special Toddler Times offered at the rec center.

Features of the Park District of La Grange Rec Center’s Indoor Playground

The PDLG Rec Center’s indoor playground is housed in a large room within the Rec Center. The playground structure features several slides; it has a triple slide, double slide, and roller slide. There are plenty of areas for your little monkeys to climb on, too. Rock grips, a wavy wedge wall climber, and hanging rings are among some of the features. The playground also includes bridges, monkey bars, and a tunnel.

The space has a rubberized floor and bright murals on all of the walls that make you feel like you’ve been shrunk down in size and are playing among small animals.

Parents can sit on a few benches inside the room while their kids play. A large open closet with hangers near the playground’s entrance provides space to hang your coats or park your stroller.

Food

You cannot bring food into the playground area, but there is a water fountain in the playground room. There are also vending machines in the Rec Center.

The building itself is a short drive from downtown La Grange, where there are many family-friendly places to eat, such as Mak’s, Palmer Place, and Blackberry Market.

Bathrooms

The two private family restrooms in the playground area both have changing tables. There are also larger public bathrooms near the front doors of the Rec Center.

Hours

The indoor playground usually opens at 9:00 am, but the time it closes varies based on the day. The Park District posts the playground’s monthly schedule on their website. Be sure to check it for holiday hours and schedule changes before going.

Note that the playground is not always open on weekends.

Prices

For residents, the playground costs $4/child ages 3-12 and is free for adults and children under 3.

For non-residents, it costs $6/child ages 3-12, $3/child ages 1-2, and is free for adults and kids 12 months and under.

Prices updated February 2024 and subject to change.

Recommended Ages

While the playground is fun for all ages, I think it is best suited for kids who are between 3 and 8. There isn’t a separate toddler playground, and since some of the equipment is high, it can be nerve-wracking to bring early walkers there on a crowded day.

Toddler Time

For younger kids, the Park District also offers Toddler Time on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10:00am – 12:00pm. While this isn’t in the same room as the playground, it’s still inside the same building. There’s plenty of equipment that the Park District brings out for little ones to climb on, crawl through, and scoot around on. My 1.5 year old loves coming here!

For Toddler Time, adults and kids under 1 are free; ages 1-5 are $4/residents and $5/non-residents.

Best Times To Go

The playground is most crowded during the morning and starts slowing down around lunch and in the afternoons. On days when school isn’t in session, it’s also more crowded. The playground is not always open on the weekends; it is best to call the Park District to check before you go there, because it is sometimes closed for parties. You can also check out their calendar.

Accessibility

Parking for the La Grange Park District is located in front of and on the side of the building (off East Avenue), and there are many handicapped parking spots in front of the building. The playground is located on the main level of the Park District building and is wheelchair accessible. The playground space has high ceilings, so it can get noisy if it’s crowded. Since it’s an enclosed room, you can easily step outside the playground and go into the hallway or the lobby area if your child needs a quieter space.

Discounts for Toddler Playtime and Indoor Playground Combo

If you’re interested in checking out both the indoor playground and toddler time during the same visit, there are discounted rates. Resident rates are $6/child (ages 3-12) and $4/child (ages 1-2); non-residents are $8/child (ages 3-12) and $6/child (ages 1-2). Adults and kids under 1 are free. Yearly passes to the Park District are also available.
