11 Safety Towns and Villages Where Kids Master Safety Skills at Their Own Speed

Safety towns and safety villages give children an opportunity to practice the rules of the road, at-home safety, and even safety around strangers. Many have cute kid-sized buildings and structures for them to navigate as a passenger or pedestrian. Most of these villages are recommended for ages 4-10. Some have open exploration time, but most have camps or classes with specific enrollment times. Let your little one explore one of these safety towns near you!

Downers Grove Safety Town

Downers Grove Park District and Downers Grove Junior Woman’s Club run Safety Town programming. Summer programming includes week-long safety camps geared for 5- and 6-year-olds.

Classes for ages 5-7 or 8-10 years old, with online registration starting in the spring. You do not have to be a resident to sign up and the building is handicapped accessible. Classes for the older children include Red Cross First Aid and Rescue Breathing. Teens can volunteer in these classes, with run throughout the summer months.

Safety camps are offered in the summer. Open road for ages 4-7 years old run seasonally. Pre-registration is required. Check their website for current offerings, as well as for details on permitted and non-permitted bicycles.

Open Bike Nights for ages 3+, with parent supervision. Entrance fee is $5 per child, with bike rental available for $3. Dates and times are currently listed on their website. Safe Sitter classes and summer camp programming are also available.

Camp, which runs in June, is for children entering kindergarten or first grade in the fall. Registration is through the Western Springs Park District, and typically begins in early April.
