In all of the playgrounds and parks we have visited, I have never come across a wheelchair swing. So when I heard about the playground at Downers Grove Community Church, we had to check it out. What a wonderful playground with equipment for various ages and abilities!
There is a section for little kids next to a covered area with picnic tables with baby swings. You can enjoy free Wifi access; the network name is posted on the window next to the picnic tables. When someone is working in the church, you are welcomed to use the bathroom and drinking fountain inside as well.
The entire playground has recycle rubber chips to make the ground cushioned, with the exception of the wheelchair swing, which has a mat path for easy access. There is also a section designed for kids ages 5-12 that includes a large play structure and dome for climbing.
Jessica Larson, who gave me permission to post this hidden gem, commented that most church members have watched a video on how to use the wheelchair swing, so if you need help they are available. There is also another swing for everyone else, included those with special needs.
There is something for everyone at this church playground and it is open to the community! We originally wrote about this playground in August 2017, which is when the photographs are from, but Camille from the church office confirmed in 2024 that the wheelchair swing is still available and open to the public!
