Local Dog Grooming Services and At-Home Tips

Our extremely fluffy pup, Elsie the Aussiedoodle, requires frequent grooming. In fact, she is the most frequent recipient of professional hair care services in our house! We quickly learned that there are many facets of grooming and several ways you can approach grooming your furry friend; the key is finding the method that works for you.

Professional Options: Salons and Mobile Grooming

While a number of factors affect the duration of a grooming appointment, you can usually expect it to take at least three to four hours. Mobile groomers may be able to groom your dog in a shorter amount of time since they are not juggling other dogs besides your own, or some locations offer doggie daycare with grooming if your dog does not like being in a kennel (and bonus: your pup will be happy and tired!).

At-Home Dog Grooming and Coat Care Tips

There are a few key grooming steps you can take at home between visits to a professional groomer.

  • Coat: Regular brushing is among the best thing you can do to care for your pet’s coat. Brushing can reduce shedding, prevent matting, and distribute dirt to help keep your dog cleaner for longer. Scheduling regular baths for your dog can also go a long way toward keeping your dog’s skin and coat healthy. Check out our favorite products post for our favorite brush and shampoo.
  • Nails: Trimming your pet’s nails can be tricky, but with a calm approach and a handful of treats, it’s possible to do this regular maintenance at home. Many vets will offer advice for how to properly trim your dog’s nails to ensure you don’t clip the quick (a sensitive part that will cause bleeding).
  • Ears: For some dog breeds with floppy ears, cleaning ears is very key! Use cotton balls rather than swabs or anything that will cause you to reach too deeply, and if you find that your pup’s ears are very dirty, red, or irritated, it’s time to take a trip to the vet.
  • Teeth: Check out oral hygiene tips in our previous post about five things you can do to keep your dog healthy.

Our furry friends guide has even more great local resources for dog owners, sponsored by Robert Hutchison, a great local Realtor who can help you successfully buy or sell a home in the Western suburbs.
