Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the US, combining tennis, badminton, and ping-pong into a game that’s easy for almost anyone to learn. Played on a smaller court with a paddle and a plastic ball similar to a wiffleball, pickleball is a family-friendly activity (or perfect date night opportunity!) that gets everyone active.
If you’re new to the sport or trying to figure out where to play as the weather turns, we’ve outlined some tips to help you get started. While many municipalities are adding outdoor courts to their recreational amenities, we’ve found quite a few indoor pickleball clubs, as well as park district facilities and tennis clubs that offer times to play pickleball.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go
- Many indoor facilities have concrete flooring on their courts, similar to what you’d find on an outdoor court. Make sure to check the flooring ahead of time, as there are both indoor and outdoor pickleballs. Outdoor balls are heavier with more holes, whereas indoor balls are lighter with fewer holes.
- Open Play means that you will be joining other people at similar skill levels. If you’d like a private session, look for a court reservation. If you’ll be playing with others, you’ll sign up for a pickleball skill levels, which are defined using a numeric scale, typically from 2.0 or Beginner, up to 5.0 or Expert.
- If you don’t have your own paddles, don’t worry. Many clubs have small pro shops near the entrance that offer equipment sales. Some may even offer complimentary balls and paddles to use while at the facility.
