Juneteenth: Folktales, Music, & More
June 17, 2023, 10:00 am - 11:00 am
FreeCelebrate Juneteenth with Mama Edie! We’ll journey through the wisdom and humor of folktales and music and experience instruments and dolls from various countries throughout the African Diaspora.
Folktales and music are two art forms that helped people survive being forced to migrate to our country and live for generations in a hostile land. In this program, we will celebrate the joy that came with the knowledge of emancipation! Mama Edie will help us imagine what this may have felt like for descendants of enslaved Africans, who learned of this new ‘freedom’ at different times in June- even in different years.
What does freedom look like? Join us to be a part of envisioning and collectively discussing just what freedom looks like, or what you think it SHOULD look like, here in this country. Are we there yet? Let’s celebrate the power and the joy of the journey – together! All ages are welcome.
