The Johnston Recreation Center in Bloomingdale has been under construction for the past year and I got a sneak peek into the new building and spaces for kids! The Bloomingdale Park District has revamped their outdoor pool, the preschool rooms are brand new, they added a giant party room/lounge area and built an indoor playground! Come out to the JRC on July 13, 2019 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm for their grand opening.
The Clubhouse Indoor Playground
The Bloomingdale Park District built a brand new indoor playground that is three stories of fun! This playground will be used in junction with the Little Acorn Academy Preschool program, but also will be available to rent for parties and open to the general public for open play throughout the week. I was able to check out the playground before it has officially opened and it has a lot to offer.
The first level of The Clubhouse has a few playground spinning hover rings and tree truck stairs to climb to get to the other levels. The second floor has an obstacle course of ropes to climb through, a swing, sky wheel and a variety of look-out bubbles. The third story offers more climbing over and under apparatuses to get to the slide entrance. That three story spiral slide was fast!
The space is geared towards the 2-7 age group, but open play includes ages 2-12. Their are bathrooms conveniently located outside the playground. Open play summer hours are Tuesdays/Thursdays from 9:00 am – 11:00 am and Tuesday nights from 5:45 pm – 7:30 pm. Adults and kids under 2 are free. Residents cost is $4 and non-residents pricing is $2 more.
Johnston Recreation Center (JRC) Party Room
The playground has entry doors from the preschool space and the party room (aka the lounge). The lounge has tables, couches and video gaming on the wall. The party room has tables indoor and outdoors for use when you rent the pool area or the indoor playground space. Renting the party room and indoor playhouse start at $185 for a two hour rental. The JRC offers many party themes options such as: superheroes, princess, sports, gymnastics, swimming/pool and cooking class parties.
Little Acorn Academy
The Bloomingdale Park District’s new preschool space, Little Acorn Academy, was just idyllic. As your enter the locked wing of the space, there are reading nooks and game areas for free play. The walls have interactive light boxes activated by touch and by voice (pictured above on the right). The walls are designed with alcoves and cutouts for children to both climb through and for cozy reading spots. The brand new preschool rooms are equipped with new cubbies, tables, and work rooms for the teachers. Each classroom has its own private toddler sized restroom. One of the walls had floor to ceiling windows for natural light. The preschool space has the use of two play areas. The indoor playground, The Clubhouse, and an outdoor fenced playground, not open to the public. The new preschool space as open, airy, and stimulates creativity!
Oasis Water Park
Part of my grand tour of the Bloomingdale Park District included checking out the upgrades made to the Oasis Water Park. The Oasis Water Park upgraded their Adventure Island with slides with a run out, pools, falls, water guns, spinning tray, buckets, and soft play water animals in the main pool. Admission rates: Non-resident child $7, adult $9, 10-day punch pass $70; resident child $5, adult $7, 10-day punch pass $50
