‘I Am Not a Costume!’ Reading and Book Signing
Join us at Isle a la Cache Museum for a special event with inspiring Indigenous author Maria DesJarlait. Discover the inspiration behind her powerful children’s book “I Am Not a Costume,” listen as she shares the story aloud and have the chance to get your own copy signed. Copies of her books will be available for purchase at the event. The book is geared toward kids ages 6 and 7, but all are welcome to attend.
“I Am Not a Costume” follows 5-year-old Ayasha, an Indigenous girl excited for her school’s costume party — until she sees classmates in fake regalia. Hurt and confused, she turns to her family, who help organize a school assembly to share stories and teach the true meaning of their culture and regalia.
Author Maria DesJarlait, an Indigenous writer from the Arikara tribe from Fort Berthold, North Dakota, and Ojibwe from Red Lake, Minnesota, is a preschool teacher in Illinois. She creates stories inspired by her grandmother and daughters that reflect the lives of contemporary Native American children, aiming to uplift and empower them to dream big.
The “I Am Not a Costume” exhibit is sponsored by The Nature Foundation of Will County
