Shedd the Straw + Shedd Aquarium Ticket Giveaway

Outdoor Activities

This Earth Day (April 22, 2017), Shedd Aquarium is celebrating the aquatic world and the importance of protecting it–both locally in Lake Michigan and out in our oceans. Though we’re lucky to have a plentiful supply of water in the Great Lakes region, our water is increasingly polluted with single-use plastics, including plastic straws. A single plastic straw might not seem like much, but the 500 million straws Americans use every day add up to a big problem for our waterways. These single-use plastics never disappear—and they harm the animals that call our waters home. We can each do our part to reduce plastic pollution. An easy first step is to Shedd the straw.

This Saturday, April 8th, between 10 am – 2 pm, renowned Chicago Chalk Champ, Shaun Hays will be at Navy Pier for a limited-time event. A three-sided chalkboard display will greet you at Polk Bros Park as you enter through the gateway to historic Navy Pier. The chalkboard will serve as a canvas for Hays as he creates unique chalk drawings that depict some of the animals that visitors are protecting when they choose to Shedd the straw. You and your children can write and share their environmental conservation commitments on the chalkboard alongside Hays’ work.

Can’t join them for the event this Saturday? Share a photo of yourself on or leading up to Earth Day using a reusable straw. Here are some example messages you can share on social media:

  • Roughly 19 billion pounds of plastic wind up in the oceans annually, killing 1 million sea birds and 100 million marine mammals. Join @SheddAquarium and commit to #SheddtheStraw this Earth Day. Learn more:
  • Because straws don’t biodegrade and are nearly impossible to recycle, it’s likely that every straw ever used still exists on our planet. Join @SheddAquarium and commit to #SheddtheStraw this Earth Day. Learn more:
  • Americans use an estimated 500 million straws a day – roughly the same weight as 1,000 cars. Join @SheddAquarium and commit to #SheddtheStraw this Earth Day. Learn more:

  • Oh my gosh, no straws!! I love this!! We have become a straw-free household after watching a horrible video about a sea turtle with a straw stuck up its nose. And you would not believe how difficult it can be when dining out to request a drink without a straw! No one seems to understand that we don’t want them. I am so glad Shedd is giving this attention, and we’ll happily show off our reusable straws!
