Races and Fun Runs in Chicago’s Western Suburbs

Whether your kids are ready for a full-blown 5K or a short and sweet fun run, the western suburbs are packed with local running events. Many of these races are full-blown community parties with live music, food, and games for kids. Check out our round-up of races to run together—or just show up and cheer!

Does your little one love to run? Sign them up for the 2K for Kids Fun Run on Saturday, August 5! Kids will race a 1.25-mile course while competing in fun and age-appropriate challenges.  Open to ages 4-10, each participant of this timed race will receive a t-shirt, bib, and post-race snacks. Plus, awards will be given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place runners in each age division and gender group!  Presented by the Glen Ellyn Park District, the 2K for Kids Fun Run is just $17 for residents and $25 for non-residents. April Races and Fun Runs

Foodie 5K  on Saturday, April 1 at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. (Also being held May 13 in Libertyville and Sept. 9 in Romeoville.) Benefits the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Bunny Run and Hop on Sunday, April 2 at Courts Plus of Elmhurst, which will include a fun course, bunny games, and a craft for parents and kids to do together.

Spring Training 5K & 1 Mile Kids Fun Run on Saturday, April 8 in La Grange.

St. John’s Beat The Eagle 5K Run/Walk & 1 Mile Fun Run on Saturday, April 8 in Lombard. Benefits St. John’s School Technology Department.

Shake It Off 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 8 at Johansen Farm Park in Bolingbrook to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Mustang Trot 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, April 9 in Downers Grove to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

Fun Run in Color on Saturday, April 22 at Memorial Park in Wheaton with post-race refreshments, vendors, sponsors, DJ entertainment, and a final color throw.

SVF Friars 5K, Fun Run & Sr. Shuffle on Saturday, April 22 at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish School in River Forest.

Superhero Glow Run on Friday, April 28 at Six Flags Great America.

Access Race 5k/10k/Capernaum Adventure Challenge on Saturday, April 29 at Danada Forest Preserve in Wheaton. Benefits local Young Life organizations.

Whistle While you Walk/Run 5K on Sunday, April 30 at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park to benefit the Emilio Perez Scholarship Fund.

Run for 102 – Race to the Finish on Sunday, April 30 in La Grange Park to benefit District 102.

 

May Races and Fun Runs

Sprint 2 Spring 5K on Saturday, May 6 in Elgin. Benefits the Hanover Township Foundation.

DuPage Human Race 5K run and 2K walk on Saturday, May 6 at The Esplanade in Downers Grove. Benefits 70 non-profit organizations serving DuPage County.

Willowbrook Spring Fling 2017 – 5K & Kids 1 mile Fun Run on Sunday, May 7 at Borse Community Park in Willowbrook. Benefits Kiwanis of Willowbrook/Burr Ridge and Gateway Special Recreation Association.

No Child Wet Behind 5K & 1K Family Run on Sunday, May 7 at Danada Forest Preserve in Wheaton to benefit a diaper drive.

Groovin’ in the Grove 5K race; Little Groovers 1/2K, 1K, and 100 yard dash; and Warrior Fitness Challenge on Saturday, May 13 at Midwestern University in Downers Grove. Benefits Sharing Connections.

Sprint With Spike: Madison 5K, 1 Mile Fun Run & 100 Yard Youth Dash on Saturday, May 13 at Madison Elementary School in Lombard.

Poppy Days .1578 Fun Run on Saturday, May 13 at Castaldo Park in Woodridge to benefit Veterans, their families and Veteran Causes.

The Y Run 5K, Super Kids 1K, and Super Kids Fun Run on Saturday, May 20 in downtown Glen Ellyn, where the Taste of Glen Ellyn will also be going on. Benefits the B.R. Ryall YMCA Scholarship Fund.

Mutt Strut 5K & 1-Mile Puppy Path on Saturday, May 20 in Lombard to benefit the Lombard Food Pantry and Dupage County Animal Care and Control.

Darien Dash 1 mile, 5K, and 10K run on Sunday, May 21 in Darien. Benefits one Darien school and one not-for-profit organization.

OCF 5K Run/Walk for Awareness on Sunday, May 21 at Redmond Park in Bensenville to spread awareness and early detection of oral cancer.

Tower Trot 5K, 10K, Double, and Fun Run on Saturday, May 27 in Western Springs to benefit Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

 

June Races and Fun Runs

Cosley Zoo Run for the Animals 5K and 10K (plus half-mile kids’ run) on Saturday, June 3 in downtown Wheaton. Benefits funds for Cosley Zoo animals, exhibit development projects, public programs, and conservation projects.

Burr Ridge Run the Ridge 5k and 1K Run/Walk on Saturday, June 3 in Burr Ridge. Benefits the ProActive Kids Foundation.

Hinsdale Humane Society Pet Walk and 5K (plus a Kids’ Dash) on Sunday, June 4 at Katherine Legge Memorial Park in Hinsdale. Benefits the Hinsdale Humane Society.

La Grange Rocks 5K on Friday evening, June 9 starting at the Lyons Township North soccer fields. Organized by The LeaderShop.

One Last Race 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, June 17 at the Danada Racetrack in Wheaton. Benefits One Last Race, a nonprofit that helps former racehorses.

The PR Mile in the evening on Saturday, June 17 in Darien. The post-race party is included for runners and will feature live music, beer, and food from Chuck’s; non-runners can participate in the party for $10.

It Takes A Village 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, June 17 at Miller Meadows Forest Preserve in Maywood. Benefits technology programs for youth and seniors (Five Pillars).

Forest Park Firefighters’ 5K (plus kids’ races) on Saturday, June 24 in at the Grove Forest Park in Forest Park. The post-race party will feature live music, food, drinks, and raffle prizes.

 

July Races and Fun Runs

Elmhurst Running Club 4 on the 4th  4-mile run on Tuesday, July 4 in downtown Elmhurst. Benefits the Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation.

Glen Ellyn Freedom Four 4-Mile Run on Tuesday, July 4 at Lake Ellyn Park in Glen Ellyn. Benefits the Glen Ellyn Park District’s scholarship funds.

The Original Waterfall Glen Xtreme 10 on Saturday, July 8 at the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Darien. Benefits Big Rig Books.

Hemingway 8K Running of the Bulls and kids’ fun run event on Saturday, July 15 in Oak Park. Dance In The Parks and the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry.

Run for Hunger 5K Run/Walk and 1/2 Mile Kids Fun Ru on Sunday, July 16 in Elmhurst. Benefits the
Elmhurst/Yorkfield Food Pantry, Disciples Food Pantry, Hand and Hand Food Pantry, and Community Table.

 

August Races and Fun Runs

Windrunner 10K on Sunday, August 20 at the Danada and Herrick Lake forest preserves in Wheaton. Benefits the Illinois Special Olympics.

Scott S’cool Scoot on Saturday, August 26 at Scott Elementary School in Naperville.

Rachel is a writer and new mom who lives in Woodridge. She recently moved from Downers Grove and grew up in Naperville, but she and her husband have been discovering new things to do now that they’ve got a baby boy in tow.
