Years ago we bought my son one of the original HEXBUG remote control spiders. It is so well made and fun that he still plays with it! It has gone through many drops and mishaps, but it’s still going strong. So when we had the opportunity to try one of HEXBUG’s new products, we were so excited!
Battle Spider Battle Ground has two remote control spiders, a fortress and many walls that you can arrange to create the ultimate spider battle. You maneuver your spider around the obstacles and strive to reach the fortress before either your opponent gets there first or you get hit a total of ten times. Each time your spider is hit by your opponent’s laser beam, it is stunned for one second. It really is a challenge!
There are some really great functions of the spiders to highlight. First, you can switch them from off, to channel A, to channel B and they give an audible indiction of what the status is. There is a noise when you are turning off the spider to reset it for the next battle and there is a voice that tells you what channel you are changing it to. No super tiny buttons that are really hard to figure out! Also, the spiders automatically turn off after while of not being used. This is huge, because how many times have your kids left toys on, not noticed and the batteries completely wear down?! The light on top of the spider illuminates when it has been hit, which makes it exciting.
You know what else is really cool? It comes with the batteries installed (you just have to pull a little tab to enable contact between them). And there are also extra batteries! Initially I thought that was an indication that this toy eats up the battery life, but that hasn’t been our experience. We’ve been playing a ton and haven’t needed to change the batteries yet. I have a feeling it’s just HEXBUG paying attention to detail and really caring about the quality of their products!
