It’s no secret that breastfeeding can be difficult, and even when it’s going well, navigating the early days of latching and comfortable positioning through new mom anxiety and sleep deprivation can be rough. Breastfeeding, more than anything else, consumed me after giving birth to my daughter in 2012. And if I remember correctly (which I probably don’t, let’s be real), breastfeeding is all I talked about for the first year of my daughter’s life. Not exactly a fun topic for non-mom company.
Whether it’s no big deal or you need extra support, it’s nice to know you can find resources and safe spaces to talk about nursing with new moms who are experiencing the same ups and downs, veteran moms who can relate, and professionals who can offer real-time solutions. For moms living in the Chicago western suburbs, check out these local resources:
A lactation consultant can be a lifesaver when breastfeeding times are tough. Most come to your home and can quickly identify issues and provide solutions just by watching you feed your baby. Find lactation consultants that serve the western suburbs.
I worked with a lactation consultant from The Mother’s Milk Company when my daughter and I ran into latching trouble early on. I had an in-home consultation and followed up several times with questions that they patiently talked me through over the phone. The Mother’s Milk Company also has a drop-in clinic at Peekaboo Playroom in Oak Park on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month from 1-2:30 p.m.
Le Leche League
Le Leche League (LLL) is an international organization that provides moms with breastfeeding resources, support, and information. The Le Leche League of Oak Park/River Forest chapter holds a Breastfeeding Cafe at Buzz Cafe the first Friday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon. They are an active chapter of LLL and offer lots of events, so check out their Facebook page for more information.
Other Le Leche League chapters in the western suburbs with regular meetings include:
- Le Leche League of La Grange Park
- La Leche League of Naperville
- La Leche League of Glen Ellyn/Wheaton
- La Leche League of Lombard
You also can visit Le Leche League of Illinois to see if there is a chapter near you.
Breastfeeding Support Groups
Several health care organizations in the area offer in-person support groups for new, breastfeeding moms as well as other breastfeeding services, including in-office lactation consultations, pump rentals, infant weight checks, and more.
The Birck Family Birth Center at Hinsdale Hospital has a Lactation Center that provides consultations to breastfeeding moms, and they hold a breastfeeding support group that meets on Tuesdays.
La Grange Memorial Hospital offers free infant weight checks and a weekly breastfeeding support group. Contact the Lactation Center for information about days and times.
In Willowbrook, West Suburban Women’s Health offers a breastfeeding support group for new moms on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Further west, Delnor Hospital in Geneva also offers a support group for breastfeeding new moms on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Breastfeeding USA Near Western Suburbs holds a support group that meets in the near western suburbs—most recently at Mission House Cafe in Berwyn. Days, times, and locations are subject to change, so keep an eye on their Facebook page for updated information.
If you’re interested in attending any of the groups above, contact the organization first to ensure you have the latest information about days, times and locations. For general breastfeeding resources, KellyMom and Le Leche League International both offer information on a range of topics.
